Link Wray ‘n’ the Menace

Link Wray kicked ass. The probably being is not a lot of people know about all the ass he kicked. And that’s too bad. My a fore mentioned love of lists I have been surprised that he is not on a lot of the greatest guitarist list(though he has been on some.) He rarely gets mentioned in conversations of with the most influential musicians or guitarist which is unjust.

His man had a banned instrumental!

That is a pretty great accomplishment in my book. And that is the instrumental is part of the probable. He could be considered a one hit wonder. Not a uncommon occurrence in his era for even great artist. But when that one hit is an instrumental it may not doom you to obscurity but it is close.

He was not the greatest technical player but he was a pioneer when it came to distortion. I think more importantly he brought menace to rock ‘n’ roll. The idea of a guitar as some raw, aggressive, and menacing was mostly born with Link and thank goodness it was.

More Analog vs. Digital an A B Test

I saw this on the box tonight:

This wasn’t very scientific but kind of interesting none the less.

I remember watching this in 93:

And people are still fighting, Niel Young is still crusty and Dave Mustaine is still kind of an idiot. The more things change the more the stay the same.

Les Paul & Mary Ford in ‘53 or the Originals

I wrote a while back about just some important and genius Les Paul is . I still really like this but can’t imagine what it would have been like to hear in ‘53 when nothing like tit was ever done. He’s like Edison with a musician’s soul.

More Renzor & More Coming

Trent Reznor is my new hero. I used to love NIN when I was younger but it faded as I got older and less pissed off. Though I always have thought he has had moments of genius as a music producer. He is a my new hero for other reasons. In September he said he wanted people in China and later to Australia to download his music illegally off the Internet because it is difficult to get legally there. In October free of contract he decided to release new material via the Internet. Reznor was was very vocal in support of the Radiohead pay what you want In Rainbows album. He spoke out about the shut down oink music sharing site and admitted having an account. And just recently released his collaboration with Saul Williams The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust for either free or $5 for better formats. My comments here. Then there is plans a remix release in different formats that comes with full mutlitracks to let anyone remix the Year Zero and upload to a remix site to share it. It is due out Nov. 20. There also are some mutlitracks stuff here. Not every song is available but it looks good for the ones that are. The tracks are even label clear enough to figure out what is what. A very busy very cool man. They are acting like he is a rebel of sorts but to me he is one of the few making sense.

And the Winner Is or A Some Wondeful Free Tools

The votes are in for the KVR Developer Challenge & xoxo’s Sounds of Nature won. It is actually a collection of synths that make nature sounds like bugs and rain but they are fun because you can make crazy sounds with them. The top 4 are really great. See democracy can work. You should check them out. I would have voted for mucoders hypercyclic but I officially suck and did not vote(and I wonder how some politicians get elected.) It is a super arp gater thing very useful and fun. Anything that makes my two finger keyboard playing some more interesting is appreciated. Ugo element of surprise is great also. It takes simple to another level and each time I clicked it it was a cool sound.

Niggytardust or Score Another for the Home Team

In case you missed it spoken word artist/rapper/actor Saul Williams released his new wonderfully titled album The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust like Radiohead’s In Rainbows. The album was a collaboration with industrial guru Trent Reznor.

Reznor on the album:

“There are obvious similarities in how Radiohead just released their new record and the way we’ve chosen to. After thinking about this way too much, I feel we’ve improved upon their idea in a few profound ways that benefit you, the consumer. You obviously will be the judge of this in the end. One thing that IS very different in our situation is that Saul’s not the household name (yet!) that Radiohead is, and that means we need your support on this more than ever. If you like what you hear, spread the word.”

They did do a better job. You can get it for free at 192k or for $5(for those of across the pond that most be like 7p they way the dollar is going ok £2.41 really) you get your choice of 192k, 320k or the awesome lossless FLAC format. All versions get album art in the form of a 33 page pdf. You also can hear some songs on Saul Williams myspage page before you make your choice. Thiswas kind of what I was suggesting Radiohead should have done earlier so I am down with it.

Even though I like the way it is released I would not have gotten it if it was not appealing to me. I have been bored with rap music for a long time. I guess I do not like rims and self aggrandizing inventories of personal belongings that much. I am sure there is better stuff than what it out front in the mass media but it is not my favorite genre so shifting through the crap has never been worth it. Reznor and a rapper that has something meaningful to say was the draw for me. I have never been big into industrial. The perpetual gloom and doom mood is a little much at times but Reznor can be brilliant and original at times.

Reznor is right the success or this is going to depend on word of mouth. That might sound like a rough way to survive but remember any money even the biggest movie makes after the opening is still dependant on word of mouth and all movies with out massive promotion budgets can be wholly dependant on word of mouth. So, here is mine:

with a complete cohesion that feels like the songs really go together other than the general mood. It doesn’t always seem like a If you know both Williams & Reznor you will probably have a good idea of what to expect. It is dark and aggressive. It is not boring which is sometimes a fault I find with it. It is not a album collaboration there are defiantly tracks that could are a lot more Williams and one that are so much Reznor they could easily fit in on a NIN album. I did not really care for the Sunday Blood Sunday cover that is not nearly as cool as rx’s cut up of George Bush singing it. Still, it is interesting and has a few excellent tracks. And if you want something with some hip-hop flavor that is the same old same old this fits the bill. I think you can get an idea if it is for you form the myspace tracks. I think it is worth $5 that not a penny goes to a global media conglomerate.
