Free BeatBurner or Beat Beyond Recognition

beatburner.jpg

code audio keeping with a current trend has made their BeatBurner freeware.  It is a looping sampler type instruments.  Ya, know one of those things that allows you to mangle a beat beyond recognition.  If you try it and like be sure to hit that donation button.  Recently ShortCircuit, the excellent sampler for Vember Audio, went free.  And discoDSP’s HighLife became a open source sampler.  I am sure Kontact 3 will be free any second now its all the rage.

Key Chain Studio

I have written a guide to having a key chain studio. The idea is basically turning a USB memory stick into a DAW. Even if this doesn’t sound that appealing to you there is a lot more info on applications that run off portable drives that would be useful to almost anyone. It is a little too long for these pages so you can find it at here.

Memphis VST or a First Time for Everything

memphis.png

Maybe it no surprise since I like to make my own hardware tools that I am trying at my making my own software tools. Memphis is my first creation. It is a stupidly simple fixed delay. I was smart for once and did not try and make an 8 oscillator synth with a built in arsenal of effects. I do have some more things in the works but I do not have a the remotest idea to be a real serious developer. I just want to make some tools I want and experiment a little. I figure why not share what I make in-case they might be of use to some one else.

If you are interesting in this kind of thing if I can do it you probably can too. If you program a little or especially know C++ well you could probably make some pretty cool stuff with out a massive amount of trouble. Toybear’s DSP Stuff is a good place to start to find most everything you’ll need to know. Then of course the is the visual stuff like the venerable Synthedit and newer Synthmaker that is accessible to almost everyone.

edit: kvr forums also have great bunch of links in this sticky.

NIN Tube or This Time Video

The only bad thing about this is I accidentally read YouTube comments.

V-Pedal or Free Your VST’s?

400_v-pedal.jpg

Some more cool gear from Musikmesse. SM Pro Audio has released 3 pieces of hardware able to host VST’s. Much like Muse’s Receptor only in smaller packages. The most interesting to me is the V-pedal:

The V-Pedal has been specifically designed for guitarists wanting to take the best guitar plug-ins (and more) out on the road in a rock-solid ‘all in one’ hardware unit. With mic/line inputs, programmable stomp switches and rotary encoders, TFT display, expression pedal, and a host of other features, the V-Pedal gives guitarists something they have never had before. The freedom to develop unique sounds from the thousands of available VST plug-ins. It’s no secret that some of the very best guitar tones and effects are now being created from within computer software plug-ins. The V-Pedal gives guitarists access to these and many more sound options in a dedicated floor stomp box. Built like a tank, simple to use, and with unheard of sonic flexibility, the V-Pedal rocks like no other.

9 Tips for Recording an Album or Common Sense Is So Uncommon

Music Think Tank has a great set of 9 tips for recording an album. The are all great common sense type that we always forget or ignore. My favorite:

7: Less Is More

These days home studios can be augmented with a dazzling array of plugins that enable you to have thousands and thousands of different sounds and instruments at your fingertips. You are limited only by your imagination, but remember that this cuts both ways.

Boss SL-20 or Not a Kitchen Appliance

bossbsl.jpg

With the MusikMesse happen in there is a bunch of new gadget news. This one caught my eye though. It the Boss SL-20. I love pedals but most new offerings are pretty boring. But hey this is not a another overdrive. It is an Audio Pattern Processor but what the hell it that. The SL stands for SLicer but that sounds like a kitchen appliance. Boss/Roland is a company I have respect for. I think they make well built products that come pretty as advertised. There pedals are solid but even for mass produced products they are rather impersonal and lack sex appeal. That most marketing though. It basically makes crazy rhythms. Kind of a gating panning type deal. The video on the site will give you a better idea than I could describe it.

The also have a new delay pedal the DD-7.
