I am really looking forward to Ardour 3.0. I will give that a try when available. Rosegarden did not strike me as being useful for my purposes. I used jack and got Ardour playing nice with my sound card it was just I could manage to get it working with Reaper in Wine. I am going to really have to look into the ASIO port to Wine. Still thin I am going to have MIDI issues with my USB MIDI/Audio devices and no native drivers.

Although used for a different purpose Rosegarden is brilliant and has more midi options than you can poke a stick at. You also need to learn how to use Jack.

The British magazine Linux Format has a nice 4 page beginners tutorial on using Studio to create a piece of music. December 2008 edition, p42-45.

enjoy

Timidity won't add MIDI support to Ardour, though, which is what he wanted. The good news: Ardour 3.0 is currently under development, and it will include MIDI support. YAY!

In case you haven´t found it, you need something like Timidity to get midi on linux. (check in synaptic, after installation midi works fine).
Also, there is an ASIO port to Wine, and the possibility to integrate VST plugins with some native linux programas.
Just a heads up from a fellow musician ;)
