Comparing bands as part of other bands mixed together is pure laziness by the writer. So, call me lazy. MGMT is one part David Bowie Spiders from Mars spacey rock (or maybe The Flaming Lips) one part New Order dancy synth pop. Depending on the song the ratio greatly swings one way or the other but it all seems to fit together with no schizophrenia. It has hooks with out being cheap. And though recalling synth pop and spacey rock music it doesn’t really belong in any genre. Which might explain why they have had only moderate success here in the US (did have more across the pond.) They should be huge as good as they are.

The Hold Steady are often referred as the greatest Bar Band in America. The is a lot of problems with a moniker like that. Just what the hell is a bar band. It means something different to everyone but to me it fits. The Hold Steady just rock.

The legend is singer Graig Finn asked guitarist Tad Kubler, “Dude, why aren’t there any bands like this anymore?” When watching the great Martin Scorsese directed film The Last Waltz that documents The Band last concert. In someways The Hold Steady are the modern version of The Band. I hate the term classic rock because it smack to much of nostalgia but The Hold Steady are a modern classic rock band(pardon the oxymoron). They are not post-rock, punk rock, or dance rock. The are just rock. A band for everyone that loved a local band that was great but never made it because the never fit in to the hot and had a singer uglier than the love child of Seal and Joe Cocker. But man did they rock.

Mix together good lyrics and rock solid riffs, a hint of Husker Du and three feet of mahogany and you have The Hold Steady. All release are solid but it doesn’t get better than the athemic “Most people are DJs” the long outro is guitar ecstasy.
