Audio Jungle complied a nice list of 29 Linux Music making Apps. The better known ones like Ardour, Audacity, and Rosegarden. Many other are included also that look worth a try. Glancing over the list most of Open Source or at least free with at least one exception the commerial trakcer Renoise.
Dark Night of the Soul is a collaboration with some two the most interesting and strange music maker of today. Then throw in visuals from surrealist indie film maker David Lynch and the fact you can but the album in the old school physical copy way sans the music and you have quite a fascination. The music album is great and I can imagine adding the book of photos from Lynch that act as a visual accompaniment create quite an effect. The package only comes included with a blank CD-R due to legal issues with Danger Mouse and EMI. More copyright hell in this modern world. You can however hear the whole wonderful album at NPR and read the article about it. It is worth a listen. It includes guest spots by James Mercer of The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Frank Black of the Pixies, Iggy Pop, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, Suzanne Vega, Vic Chesnutt, David Lynch, and Scott Spillane of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Gerbils. And if you think NPR is just a lot of talk you are sadly mistaken. All Songs Considered is one of the best sources for great music you may not hear elsewhere just like Dark Night of the Soul. Even the during the news programs you’ll hear the best damn bumper music ever. Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain -’Teenage Kicks’ My last post was of cigar box guitars so why not ukuleles now. I am a sucker for ukulele and mandolin cover songs that don’t seem to fit them the instruments until you here them. Like John Peel’s all time favorite Teenage Kicks. The are more videos of the The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain on YouTube. Like: The Kaiser Chiefs with The Ukulele Orchestra – Ruby You also may want to check out their website. Cigar Box Nation is a site dedicated to cigar box guitars. Maybe a more fitting picture would be of a cigar box guitar But i find that amp beautiful. He is an idea of a cigar box guitar featured on the site: There is something pure about cigar box guitars no matter if they conjures thoughts of homemade delta blues or a rain day childhood musical project. I just have to build one myself. I have to find a cool box. CAO boxes are awesome looking but think there construction would be crap for this. There even is a cottage industry that has sprung up around cigar box guitars. Check out Ted Crocker’s stuff. Its pretty cool. You also might want to check out Scotty’s Cigar Box Guitars or MAKE. I found this list of VST plug-ins that list there compatible with Linux. It gives you idea of how or if they work and some work around for problems. You can find the list here. All of this is of course depenant on WINE and either FST or DSSI. This kind of of thing is is probably only for a minority of people the love Linux and don’t mind hack things together a bit. Of course expriementing on your own is encouraged but the list is helpful. Hopefully more of this kind of thing continues. One of the major draw backs for me is the there are very few audio plugins as compared with other platforms. Find away to use Windows pluggies is a very good thing. ![]()
Reason fans might final have a integrated recording option. It is kind of hard to believe. I can’t wait to give it a try. They are beta testing right now. You can sign up here.

Haven’t really cared for rap for a long time. But always liked DEL. Funk Man is just is just OK. But his song with J. Masic was one of the great fusion of rap and rock in sea of bad ones. ![]() |
